The Story Behind BHK Carpeting and Flooring Inc.

My Journey: Building a Company From the Ground Up

My name is Behlul Hazar Koca, and I am the Founder and President of BHK Carpeting and Flooring Inc.

My journey in the flooring industry began with a simple goal: to build a successful business through hard work, dedication, quality craftsmanship, and a commitment to keeping my word.

In 2017, I established BHK Carpeting and Flooring Inc. as a one-person operation, specializing in residential carpet installation.

At that time, I did not have a large workforce or an established commercial installation division. What I had was practical installation experience, determination, and the belief that consistent workmanship and reliability could create opportunities for long-term growth.

I started by performing installations myself, taking responsibility for every aspect of the work, from preparation and installation to customer satisfaction and final completion.

As the business developed, I recognized that building a successful installation company required more than individual skill. It required a dependable team, proper training, strong leadership, and a system that could consistently deliver results.

Building a Team Through Family, Training, and Trust

One of the most important decisions in my professional journey was bringing members of my family into the flooring industry.

Over the years, I introduced 11 of my cousins and two of my brothers to the trade, teaching them installation skills, technical knowledge, discipline, and professional standards.

My goal was to create a team of skilled installers who understood accountability, teamwork, efficiency, and quality.

Today, those early efforts have become the foundation of our commercial flooring installation division.

What began as one installer has developed into a coordinated, family-based installation operation capable of supporting major commercial flooring projects.

Our Transition Into Commercial Flooring

Our next major step was moving beyond residential flooring and entering the commercial sector.

We began taking on renovation and replacement projects (R&R) in retirement homes and long-term care facilities.

Working in operational facilities required a different level of organization, planning, communication, and responsibility.

We developed experience coordinating installations around occupied spaces, managing schedules, working alongside other trades, and maintaining quality standards while minimizing disruption.

As our experience grew, so did our confidence.

Our First Major Breakthrough: Guildwood Retirement Home

One of the most significant milestones in our company’s history was our first major commercial project, Guildwood Retirement Home, involving approximately 350,000 square feet.

For our team, this represented much more than another flooring contract.

It was an opportunity to demonstrate that a company built from a single installer could take on the responsibilities of a major commercial installation project.

The scale of the project challenged us to improve workforce coordination, productivity, scheduling, equipment management, and overall job site organization.

That experience changed the way I viewed the future of BHK.

I realized our team had the potential to become a dependable installation partner for major commercial flooring contractors.

Expanding Our Experience: Conestoga College

Our involvement in Conestoga College Phase 1 and Phase 2 marked another important chapter in our company’s development.

These projects strengthened our commercial installation experience and reinforced the importance of planning, manpower coordination, technical execution, and meeting demanding construction schedules.

With every project, our team gained experience, our internal systems improved, and our ability to manage larger installation scopes continued to develop.

Our growth was not based on becoming a flooring material supplier or competing with established flooring contractors.

Instead, we focused on becoming better at what we do best: installation.

Our Specialized Installation Divisions

Today, BHK Carpeting and Flooring Inc. operates through three specialized installation divisions.

13installers

Commercial Flooring Installation Division

Our commercial flooring team consists of 13 installers, including 11 cousins and two brothers, specializing in commercial carpet, carpet tile, resilient flooring, glue-down LVT, sheet vinyl, and related floor preparation.

8installers

Hardwood, Laminate, and Click Vinyl Division

We have an additional team of eight installers specializing in hardwood flooring, laminate flooring, and click vinyl installation.

20–25installers available

Tile Installation Division

Our tile installation operations have access to approximately 20–25 installers, allowing us to support projects requiring substantial manpower and coordinated installation schedules.

Our strength is not measured solely by the number of installers. It is measured by how effectively our teams are trained, organized, managed, and supported.

What Makes BHK Different

We are not a traditional flooring supply company, and we do not position ourselves as a primary flooring contractor.

Our business is built around providing professional installation services as a subcontractor to established flooring contractors.

We understand our role, respect the relationships between flooring contractors and their clients, and focus on delivering the installation work entrusted to us.

Our strengths include skilled manpower, job site management, reliable scheduling, quality workmanship, equipment availability, and project completion.

We have invested in developing the tools, equipment, and organizational capabilities needed to operate across multiple job sites simultaneously.

Our Commitment to Deadlines

One of the principles I have maintained throughout my career is that a commitment must be respected.

Since establishing BHK in 2017, I take particular pride in our record of completing projects within agreed timelines.

For me, finishing on time is not simply a business objective. It reflects our discipline, planning, and respect for the contractors who trust us.

We focus on anticipating challenges, managing manpower effectively, and finding practical solutions before minor issues become major delays.

Developing Our Own Service and Repair System

As our company grew, I recognized that pulling installation crews away from active projects to address service calls, repairs, or deficiencies could affect productivity and scheduling.

To address this challenge, we developed our own internal service and repair system.

This allows installation teams to remain focused on active projects while service-related responsibilities can be managed separately whenever possible.

Our objective is to provide better support to our flooring contractor partners, reduce unnecessary interruptions, and maintain quality through final project completion.

My Philosophy as a Business Owner

I have never believed that success in the flooring industry comes from manpower alone.

A large crew without proper management can create more problems than it solves.

Real capability comes from combining skilled installers with strong coordination, the right equipment, realistic scheduling, technical knowledge, and accountability.

I believe strongly in developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople.

Training my cousins and brothers was one of the first steps in that commitment.

Today, I am proud that we have built a relatively young, skilled, and motivated installation workforce capable of contributing to demanding commercial construction projects.

For me, leadership means more than assigning work. It means preparing people to take responsibility, solve problems, work together, and maintain professional standards.

Looking Toward the Future

When I look back at 2017, I remember a business that began with one person installing residential carpet.

Today, that same business has grown into a multi-division flooring installation operation with experience in major commercial and institutional projects.

The journey has required years of hard work, continuous learning, personal commitment, and the development of a reliable team.

I do not measure our success only by the size of the projects we undertake.

I measure it by the trust we earn, the quality we deliver, the people we develop, and our ability to fulfill the commitments we make.

My vision is to establish BHK Carpeting and Flooring Inc. as one of Ontario’s most respected, dependable, and capable independent flooring installation partners.

Our story began with one installer.

Our growth came through family, training, discipline, and determination.

Our future will continue to be built on those same principles.

We do not simply install flooring. We build trust through execution.
